On December 18, 1934, Captain Mercer flew the historic de Havilland Fox Moth ZK-ADI to Inchbonnie Airfield, marking the beginning of an important chapter in New Zealand’s aviation history. He transported two passengers, Mr. Harry Worrall and Mr. Hume Christie, who arrived by train from Christchurch, to Franz Josef for the launch celebrations.

What to Expect:

  • Historic Aircraft on site: Weather permitting, the de Havilland Fox Moth ZK-ADI, the same aircraft from the 1934 event, will return to Inchbonnie.

  • Commemorative Plaque Unveiling: Honoring Captain Mercer and the significance of the first scheduled air service.

  • Aircraft Display: Various planes will be flying in for a spectacular display (weather-dependent).

  • Vintage Car Displays: Admire a collection of classic vehicles as part of the day’s festivities.

  • Creative Community Events: Fun, family-friendly activities for all ages.

  • Aviation History Night in Moana: In the evening, join us for an illustrated presentation hosted by Rev Dr. Richard Waugh and Bishop Steven Lowe who will delve into the milestones of New Zealand’s aviation history.

This community celebration will bring together the West Coast community, aviation enthusiasts, history buffs, and local families to commemorate the milestone event that put Inchbonnie on the map of New Zealand’s aviation heritage. Everyone is welcome, and we encourage the local community and visitors alike to join in this special celebration.
